My Mother-in-Law Told Me, “If You Can’t Keep That Baby Quiet, You Don’t Belong in My House”—Seconds Later the Crying Suddenly Stopped, and While Doctors Rushed Her Away, Brenda Leaned Close and Said, “Whatever They Ask, Say It Was an Accident,” Not Knowing I Was About to Remember Something Upstairs

Part 1 of 3

Rosie stopped crying the instant she hit the hardwood floor.

One second, my three-week-old daughter was screaming against my shoulder. The next, my mother-in-law Brenda struck me across the face.

I stumbled sideways.

Rosie slipped from my arms.

“Rosie!”

I dropped to my knees.

She lay beneath the hallway night-light, completely still.

Brenda stepped backward.

“Samantha, you dropped her.”

I looked at her.

“You hit me.”

“I barely touched you.”

I lifted Rosie carefully. Her head fell against my arm.

“Brian!”

My husband came running from our bedroom.

“What happened?”

Brenda answered first.

“She lost her balance.”

“Your mother hit me.”

Brian looked between us.

For one terrible second, he said nothing.

Then Brenda pointed toward Rosie.

“Standing here arguing isn’t helping the baby.”

I ran downstairs barefoot and drove straight to the hospital.

“Her Heart Wasn’t Beating”

Brian and I had moved into Brenda’s Atlanta home four months earlier after he lost his job.

It was supposed to be temporary.

But Brenda never let me forget the house belonged to her.

She criticized my cooking, clothes, laundry, and eventually everything I did with Rosie.

Brian always gave me the same answer.

“Mom doesn’t mean anything by it.”

Three nights before Rosie fell, Brenda texted me:

If that baby keeps screaming every night, find somewhere else to live.

I showed Brian.

“She’s just frustrated.”

I should have pushed harder.

At the hospital, a nurse took Rosie from me immediately.

Doctors rushed her through double doors while I stood barefoot in the hallway.

Several minutes later, a doctor approached.

“Mrs. Albright, your daughter’s heart was not beating when she arrived.”

I gripped the back of a chair.

“Is she dead?”

“We’re working on her.”

They managed to restore Rosie’s heartbeat, but scans showed a severe head injury with dangerous swelling.

Then Brian and Brenda arrived.

Brenda was carrying the shoes I’d left behind.

She placed them beside me.

“You need to tell them you were exhausted and dropped her.”

I stared at her.

“You hit me.”

Brian lowered his voice.

“Can we not do this here?”

“Your daughter is fighting for her life.”

Brenda folded her arms.

“I didn’t make you drop your child.”

A nurse approached.

“Mrs. Albright, I need to speak with you alone.”

As Brenda walked away, she leaned toward me.

“Think carefully before you make this worse.”

Inside a consultation room, the nurse asked what had really happened.

For once, I didn’t protect anybody.

“My mother-in-law hit me while I was holding my baby.”

Hospital security was contacted.

Then the police came.

Brian Chose the Same Excuse Again

Officer Martinez photographed the swelling on my cheek.

I told him everything.

Rosie crying.

Brenda coming upstairs.

Her telling me:

“Shut her up, or get out.”

Then the slap.

He asked whether Brenda had threatened me before.

I opened my phone.

There were messages.

My house, my rules.

If you can’t control that baby, leave.

You need to remember your place.

I also told him about an argument during my pregnancy when Brenda had shoved past me hard enough to knock my hip against the kitchen counter.

Brian had witnessed it.

His response that day had been:

“Both of you need to stop provoking each other.”

Officer Martinez left to question him.

When he returned, his expression had changed.

“Your husband says he’s never heard his mother threaten you.”

I stared through the glass at Brian.

He wouldn’t look at me.

Then my phone vibrated.

A security notification.

Motion detected: Upstairs Hallway.

I froze.

The camera.

Brian had installed it months earlier to cover the staircase.

The footage was automatically stored online.

I opened the security app and found the recording from 11:47 p.m.

“Officer.”

Martinez came closer.

“I think you need to see this.”

The Camera Had Recorded Everything

I pressed play.

There I was holding Rosie.

Brenda walked upstairs.

“How long are you going to let her scream?”

“I’m trying to settle her.”

“Try harder.”

I turned away.

Brenda followed.

“Don’t walk away when I’m speaking to you.”

“Please go downstairs, Brenda.”

She stepped forward.

Her arm moved.

My head snapped sideways.

Rosie fell.

I stopped breathing as I watched it happen again.

But the recording continued.

It showed me dropping to my knees.

Then Brenda’s voice came through clearly.

“Don’t you dare blame this on me. You dropped her.”

Officer Martinez held out his hand.

“May I see that?”

I gave him my phone.

He watched the recording twice.

Then he called his partner over.

“Is this stored in the cloud?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t delete anything.”

The officers walked toward Brenda.

Brian stood.

Brenda began shaking her head.

Then she pointed toward me.

I couldn’t hear what she was saying.

A moment later, an officer turned her around and placed her hands behind her back.
